Considerations
Artists applying to the C3 Fellowship Program should be mindful of these considerations especially if:
You have or expect to have numerous or time-consuming commitments outside of Charlotte within the next year. We support the artists' efforts to develop professionally but we ask that you utilize the expansive artist studio to continue creating work or developing your professional practice. While we have no specific expectations of an artist’s social activities during the fellowship period, being present in the space is a requirement and necessary to be involved as an arts team member. Exceptions are made as necessary, but artists are expected to let C3 know ahead of time of their plans to be absent for an extended period of time.
You are unable to be physically active, especially working outdoors at times. The purpose of gaining a complete understanding of the built environment, you will be expected to assist at times in the fabrication area or with an arts installation. Our real-world education includes hands-on work within the workshop space or in the natural environment.
Your family or significant other is not comfortable with your physical absence (if you live outside the Charlotte, NC metro area). Sometimes we make commitments, and we are unable to emotionally handle time away from our comfortable spaces.
You have life issues that require special resources or continuous emotional support networks (if you live outside the Charlotte, NC metro area).
Medical situations that require intensive or specialized treatment that would be difficult to acquire away from your home environment (if you live outside the Charlotte, NC metro area).
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: May I apply with my partner as a team or individually? A: It is not recommended that artists who maintain individual practices apply together. If you ALWAYS work as a collaborative team, then you must apply as a team (2 people max). If you work primarily as individuals, then apply separately. All artists will still share the expansive studio space.
Q: Is there available housing included with this fellowship? A: No, not at this time. Selected fellows must take care of their housing for the program. Securing housing for the out of town fellow is a future goal of the program.
Q: Should I bring my furniture, tools or other supplies? A: Participants are welcome to bring any items or art supplies they feel are necessary to continue their professional artistic practice. Hazardous, certain electrical machines or devices must be approved by C3 staff prior to beginning fellowship. Any furniture or other items brought in must be cleared out when the program time is completed. The program will supply basic working tools for the fellows to share in the space. There are also working desks and other seating areas within the space for eating, relaxing or working on a computer. A private Zen booth is available for making private phone calls or online meetings.
Q: Do you accept international applicants? A: Yes, the program accepts applications from artists working locally, nationally, and internationally. Please note, however, that the program cannot provide visas, nor can it sponsor international applicants. All international artists in the residency program must secure their own visas prior to their arrival. The fellowship goal is to select an artist from the local Charlotte metro area and another from out of town so they can learn, support and teach each other about their different arts communities.
Q: Is there internet access? A: Yes, we provide free wireless internet for the fellowship program.
Q: Can I bring my pet? A: No, unfortunately no pets will be permitted at this time.
Q: Do I need insurance? A: Artists are responsible for themselves and should be insured and in time for the fellowship. Neither ACSM Inc nor the C3 Public Arts Fellowship Program are responsible and will not cover any damages to the artists’ property or themselves during the program term.
Q: When will the fellows be notified? A: Selected applicants will receive an email mid September 2023.
Q: When are the start and end dates of the fellowship? A: The fellows are able to start moving in as early as January 2nd, 2024, but the program formally begins on Monday, January 8th. The fellowship will conclude by December 31st, 2024.
Q: Will the program accept any late applications? A: No, we cannot accept any late or uncompleted applications. To respect our jury panel’s time, we must comply to the deadlines stated on the submission portal.
